This Is How to Get Rid of Stains on Your Mattress

Did you know that some mattresses can last as long as 20 years? But if you don’t take great care of your mattress, its lifespan might be cut in half. Stains in particular can be a big problem for mattresses because cleaning a mattress is not exactly an easy task.

It isn’t as if you can throw your mattress into your washing machine, and even if you could, getting your mattress wet is never a good idea. But how getting rid of stains on your mattress isn’t an impossible task. Keep reading and learn more about the tips and tricks you’ll need to remove stubborn stains from your mattress.

How to Clean Your Mattress Without Ruining It

Over the years, your mattress will slowly become loaded with all sorts of debris, from dust and dust mites to hair and dead skin cells. Stains on the surface of the mattress will only add to the time you will need to spend cleaning your mattress. The problem is that you should avoid getting your mattress wet as much as possible.

But how can you remove all those stains and debris? Before you get to the stains, you will want to take cleaning a mattress to another level. First, get a vacuum and get rid of any debris that might be on top of the mattress.

This is important because if there is still dirt and dust on the mattress when it’s time to clean up the stains, you are going to be smearing all that debris across the rest of your mattress. A vacuum is the best way to go about doing this, but if you don’t have a vacuum on hand, a lint roller may do the trick, although it won’t do as good of a job.

The Details

Once the surface of your mattress is clean, you can start to focus on the stains. Different types of stains are easier to remove than others. For example, if you spilled tea on your bed, it might not be all that difficult to remove the stain, especially if the tea was lighter in color. However, coffee stains, blood, and urine are much more difficult to remove.

This is especially true if you left the stains on the mattress for a long time before cleaning them. The longer you leave the stains, the more the substances will latch onto the fibers of your mattress. As a result, it will be difficult to dislodge those substances from the mattress’s fibers.

What Ingredients Do You Need to Clean a Mattress?

How to clean a mattress is a delicate procedure. As mentioned before, mattresses don’t like water. That’s because if you soak your mattress, the water will end up inside the mattress.

When this happens, it will create the perfect breeding ground for bacteria and tiny insects. In some cases, mold might start to grow inside your mattress, which not only will create an unpleasant odor but will also be bad for your health, especially if you have allergies. For that reason, you won’t want to go at your stained mattress with a bucket of water and soap.

Instead, you will want to have a few important ingredients on hand, namely baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, dish soap, vinegar, a little bit of water, and some rags. Most stains, especially blood or urine stains, can be removed with a bit of baking soda and hydrogen peroxide

Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide in particular, is great for latching onto particles of blood and dissolving them, even if they have been embedded into the fabric of the mattress for a long time. You can also buy a stain remover from your local store, but these cleaners often have harsh chemicals that might cause damage to the fabric of your mattress.

More than that, these cleaners also have strong chemical smells that might remain in your mattress. When you’re trying to sleep, the last thing you want to do is smell harsh chemicals. Besides being annoying, it is also bad for your health.

Ingredients like hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, and white vinegar, however, are quite harmless. They also don’t carry strong odors, so once you’re done cleaning, you shouldn’t have to worry about smelling any chemicals once it’s time to go to bed.

How to Clean Your Mattress the Right Way

Once you have all your ingredients, you will want to mix them, except for the baking soda. Putting the cleaning fluid in a spray bottle is a good idea, but it isn’t necessary. All you need to do is dab the mattress stain with the cleaning solution using a rag.

You should make sure that the stain is completely covered by the cleaning solution. Once this is done, sprinkle some baking soda over the top of the stain. Then, all you have to do is wait.

You should wait for at least 8 hours, but a longer period will provide better results. The longer the baking soda and the cleaning solution interact with the stain, the better chance the ingredients will have to dislodge the stain from the fibers of the mattress. After several hours, the cleaning solution will be dry, and you should go ahead and vacuum the area.

This will pike up the baking soda and you will be able to see how much of the stain was removed. For better results, repeat this process a few times.
